A note from the author: Welcome to my blog. This is the first of a series of articles. If you wish to choose another article, click on Table of Contents. I hope you enjoy the article. Don’t forget to leave your comments.
In the evenings, while Sonia is watching her favorite shows, I use my time machine to visit performers from the past. You don’t believe I have a time machine? I surely do! It’s a laptop computer, connected to the magic internet, on which I run YouTube videos. I have watched concert performances by many of my favorite musical performers, who have passed away years ago. Oh, and I watch lots of them from folks who are still around, too.
I have a broad taste in music, but some of my favorites are Bluegrass, Southern Gospel, Classic Country, and anything by Elvis. I have always liked religious music, when it is well performed and has some spirit and joy in it. So, my musical adventures led me to Bill Gaither and his Homecoming series. Let me tell you – those folks know how to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.”
Do you know Bill Gaither? Do you know his friends? If you start to get acquainted with them, you may become addicted, like me! Even if you are one of the many people who are turned off by religion and religious music, please bear with me for a while. There is something in the Gaither music videos that I would like you to see and think about, before you dismiss what I am saying.
I’ve had my own struggles with religion over the years, and my attitudes and beliefs have evolved considerably. I may get into bits of this in future blogs, but for now, realize that I very well may have been where you are. Stick with me and I will show you something amazing!
Included below are links to five of the videos that I liked. As you watch them, look at the people in the crowd. They aren’t just any audience. They are gospel musicians who participate in the Gaither Homecomings. Many of these videos are a bit old now, and several of the people have passed on. What I want you to notice is that they are HAPPY PEOPLE! Do you see a sad face in the crowd? I’ve probably watched a couple hundred of these videos now, and I attest that this is the happiest community of folks that I have ever encountered! (more text below the video links and clips)
What do these folks have that most people don’t? Would you like to have some of what they’re having? In my next post, I will outline what I believe to be the source of their happiness. In a post after that, I will describe a few of the obstacles that have gotten in the way of my happiness, and how I overcame them.
